Accessibility at AIR

AIR aims to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. This page is built from the register the product is tested against, so it cannot drift from it.

What AIR cannot do

A teacher who uses a keyboard only cannot draw on the whiteboard or annotate a slide. They can build and teach a full lesson from slides.
A teacher who uses a keyboard only cannot drag elements in the slide editor. Every element property, including position and size, can be set from the keyboard.
Slides do not reflow to a narrow screen. They scale, so the whole slide stays the shape it was written in.
AIR does not provide live captions for online classes. A student who is deaf or hard of hearing has no equivalent for the teacher's spoken explanation. Ask your teacher to put key points on the slide or the board.
The AIR interface is available in English. The student join and classroom screens are also available in Hindi. Lesson content is shown in the language your teacher wrote it in.
Text boxes and tick boxes are drawn with a faint outline. They are labelled and work normally, but the edge of the box may be hard to see before you click into it.

The exceptions in full

2.1.1 Keyboard — Drawing freehand on the whiteboard

Freehand drawing is a pointer gesture whose value is the gesture. Phase 15 AX-3 and Phase 17 AC-5 both declare it not keyboard-operable and Phase 34 R-6 accepts the declaration: a fake keyboard drawing mode is something nobody can teach with.

What you can do instead. A keyboard crosshair places arrows, boxes and the eraser at canvas coordinates (`src/app/(app)/sessions/[sessionId]/ink.tsx` — arrows move it, Space plants a point). It is not a pen and does not claim to be. Every non-drawing OUTCOME on the board is keyboard-reachable and `tests/a11y/` asserts each one by outcome.

Owned by phase 15 (AT2-Live). Next reviewed 2026-12-01.

2.1.1 Keyboard — Annotating a slide

The same gesture over a slide instead of a board. Phase 17 AC-5 declares it; R-6 accepts it and attaches CX-2's obligation to it.

What you can do instead. The same keyboard crosshair. Tool, colour, width, undo, redo, clear and leaving the layer are all keyboard-operable, which is Phase 17 TS-6's claim — asserted here rather than trusted.

Owned by phase 17 (AT2-Live). Next reviewed 2026-12-01.

2.1.1 Keyboard — Dragging an element to position or resize it on the slide canvas

Direct manipulation of a free-placed element is a pointer gesture. Phase 7 §183 called this "progressively improved", which commits to nothing and expires never; R-11 strikes that phrasing and replaces it with this row, which has an owner and a date.

What you can do instead. Every element property direct manipulation sets — position, size, order, alignment — is settable from the element property panel. What a keyboard-only teacher cannot do is DRAG. What they can do is build the same slide.

Owned by phase 7 (AT2-Authoring). Next reviewed 2026-12-01.

1.4.10 Reflow — The fixed 1920x1080 slide composition

A slide is a fixed composition. Reflowing it to 320 CSS px does not produce a smaller slide, it produces a DIFFERENT slide — and the teacher's preview would then stop being the thing the room sees, which is Phase 14 R-7's whole requirement.

What you can do instead. It SCALES rather than reflows: one CSS transform over a fixed logical canvas (`SlideStage`, Phase 14 RL-1), so every element and every annotation scale together. 200% zoom is supported by consequence.

Owned by phase 14 (AT2-Live). Next reviewed 2026-12-01.

1.2.4 Captions (Live) — Live audio in an online class

R-13. In order of weight: the speech is mostly children's, and recording and transmitting it is a decision far above this phase for a product handling minors (Phase 25 §24); Jitsi transcription needs infrastructure Phase 11 did not deploy and Phase 29 has not budgeted; and an inaccurate caption in a science lesson is worse than none.

There is no equivalent. This outcome cannot be reached another way in this release.

Owned by phase 30 (Product Owner). Next reviewed 2026-12-01.

Not a WCAG criterion — a scope statement — The language the interface is written in

R-2 LD-1. V1 ships one teacher interface language. The catalogue exists so that shipping a second one is a translation rather than a retrofit; the translations do not.

What you can do instead. The student surfaces — the ones a child reads — ship English and Hindi.

Owned by phase 31 (Product Owner). Next reviewed 2026-12-01.

1.4.11 Non-text Contrast — The boundary that shows where a text field, checkbox, radio or switch is

FOUND BY THIS PHASE'S OWN GATE, on the day it was turned on. `--color-border-strong` (#cbc5b8) on `--color-surface` (#ffffff) is 1.72:1, and 1.4.11 requires 3:1 for the visual information needed to identify a user interface component. It is the boundary of `Input`, `Textarea`, `Select`, `Checkbox`, `Radio` and `Switch` — controls whose edge is the ONLY thing showing where they are. A white field on a white card with a 1.72:1 border has no perceivable extent. SCOPED, deliberately. A secondary `Button` uses the same token and is NOT in this row: it carries a text label, so its boundary is not information required to identify it. Widening this to every use of the token would make it easy to dismiss; narrowing it to the controls that genuinely fail is what makes it actionable. THIS IS A FINDING ABOUT A TOKEN AND IS NOT WORKED AROUND LOCALLY. Phase 34 owns the register and the gate; the Foundation owns the token. A surface adding a one-off darker border here would defeat the design system that made the failure findable in one place. Filed as a Foundation request; `docs/PHASE34-ACCESSIBILITY.md` §6 carries the arithmetic and the two candidate values.

What you can do instead. None is needed to OPERATE the control — every field has a persistent visible label, a hint and a focus ring at 4.4:1, so it is reachable, named and operable. What is missing is the low-vision affordance of seeing the box before you focus it.

Owned by phase 1 (Foundation). Next reviewed 2026-10-15.

What has actually been checked

No screen in this release carries a signed review by an independent operator, and no classroom has been measured from its back row. A conformance class is a claim, and this page prints the evidence beside each one so you can tell the two apart.
